Ideal Customer Profile (ICP)
A clear description of the type of customer that's the best fit for what you sell.
An Ideal Customer Profile is a written picture of the customer you most want more of — the one who genuinely needs what you offer, gets real value from it, buys without a fight, and sticks around. If you sell to companies, an ICP describes the firm (industry, size, budget, situation); if you sell to consumers, it describes the person (their goals, habits, and circumstances). It's built from your actual best customers, not a wish list.
An ICP is narrower and sharper than a broad target market: it's meant to guide who you go after and who you politely pass on. It shapes your messaging, your ad targeting, which leads you prioritize, and even what you build. Most businesses refine their ICP over time as they learn which customers turn out to be the happiest and most profitable.
Why it matters
Knowing exactly who you serve best stops you wasting money and effort on poor-fit prospects and concentrates growth where it actually pays off.
