llms.txt is a proposed standard: a plain text file you place on your website that acts like a guide for AI tools, pointing them to your key pages and content in a simplified, easy-to-read format. The idea is to help large language models find and understand what matters most on your site without wading through cluttered page code.
It's a newer, still-emerging convention (loosely inspired by the long-standing robots.txt file), and not every AI tool reads it yet. Adding one is low-effort and low-risk, so many businesses treat it as a small bet on being better understood as more people start discovering businesses through AI assistants.
